At the beginning of the twentieth century Belgium was one of the most industrialised nations in the world. Eager to keep up with the technological progress after World War I, governmental authorities recognised the need for a national aeronautical industry. This led to the creation of the Chambre Syndicale des Industries Aeronautiques (The Chamber of Aeronautical Industries) regrouping the new born industries.
Weakened and partly destroyed by World War II, but more than ever convinced of the importance of this High Tech branch, the aeronautical industry rebuilt its technical potential based on the Belgian Air Force's reequipment programs.
In 1952 action was taken by FAIREY (now SONACA), F.N. (now TECHSPACE AERO) and Stampe & Renard to set up a professional, industrial association to represent the Belgian Aeronautical Industry.
GEBECOMA the Belgian Aerospace Association was born !!!
GEBECOMA (Groupement Belge des Constructeurs de Materiel Aerospatial , Groepering van de Belgische Constructeurs van Materiaal voor Aeronautica).
Over the following years GEBECOMA has grown, but has always retained its initial and inherent characteristics of an independant association of industries, open to all Belgian High Tech candidates and leaving each member entirely free to manage its own industrial activities.
